Day 3: SAFE AND CIVIL (30-40 minutes)
1. Ask students what they learned yesterday about the different zones of the playground. Review main points.
2. Tell students: For the past two days we have discussed how to make the Morning Recess better. We have discussed how to go and come back from recess and how to move in the different areas/zones of the playground. Today we’re going to learn how to act with each other and be safe during recess.
3. Review the effects section of the Multi-Flow Map from yesterday and ask students how we will make this happen.
4. Start filling in the causes section of the Multi-Flow Map.
5. Tell students we will watch a video, now, about how to act at recess and see if there is anything else that we would like to add to our map.
6. Show the “Be Safe and Civil” video, pause before the Quiz.
7. Highlight through discussion the main points of the video, reviewing civil and safe behaviors.
8. Review with class policy #6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 by reading from the “Student Responsibilities” section of the Playground Policy with the class:
· Follow game rules as taught
· Be respectful toward peers and adults by using kind and polite language
· If any adult asks that you to correct a behavior while moving on campus, respond respectfully and correct the behavior as requested
· Students who repeatedly behave inappropriately on the playground will take a recess behavior class to learn appropriate recess behavior
· Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself unless playing two finger tag
· If you hurt another student by accident, apologize for your actions by looking at the individual and kindly saying you are sorry
· Report any safety concerns or injuries to an adult on supervision, do not try to move seriously injured students
· Displays of affection are inappropriate and will not be accepted on campus at any time
9. Add any additional rules to the cause section of your map.
10. Take the Quiz on the video.
11. Role-play using polite language, responding respectfully to an adult correcting behavior, apologizing for accidents and reporting safety issues to teachers.
12. Review student-generated multi-flow map (this should include the ‘rules’ for playground behavior). Post the multi-flow map to review as reminders before recess and as needed.
